More Money = New Car?

What started out to be a lousy week for me has decidedly gotten better…..

Monday, my car broke down. My car is always breaking down. It was the alternator. Again. So, I took the day off to spend some time to give it some tender loving car and nurse it back to health. I took the whole day, in part, because I had to prepare to go to jury duty the next day, which means I absolutely needed to have some sort of transportation to get there. The other part was that I wanted to see fixing my car through. I’m rather protective of the old girl. It was my mother’s car. Having it break down was not a happy making thing. I stressed, fretted and worried all day.

Tuesday, I had a chat with the boss about having taken the day off. We discussed what was wrong with it and he offered to have one of the guys who fixes the company vehicles look over it. This left me a little worried, but I agreed to let that happen. Wednesday the results of said looksie came back, and the bossman was concerned about my car and it’s potential dangerous habit to break down. We chatted a bit about options, which could possibly include using one of the company vehicles, or getting a loan to help buy a new one. He’s actually rather generous that way with the people who work for him.

Today, we discussed the raise that I’m supposed to be getting again. This time, the discussion was associated with the numbers and figures that would be involved in getting said raise. That being said, I’ll be getting $6,000 more a year. This…. This /IS/ a happy making thing. The caveat was sorta that I got a new car to make sure I have dependable, reliable transportation – and I’d be given a partial day off to go look, paid, if I wanted.

So, all the bad, all the worry from the beginning of the week, has started to ebb away – but only started.

Now, I need to find a car; a new one preferably which will be cheap, but dependable. Even with the raise I can’t afford all that much and I’d prefer not to be paying on it for the rest of my life, ya know? II figure I can /possibly/ afford something between $5,000-$15,000, depending on what’s out there. I don’t care if it’s fully featured or not. It needs to 1) run and 2) have a working radio, 3) have AC and 4) have windows that open and close. I know, I know, I don’t ask for much, right?

Anyone have any recommendations or websites for me to consider? The sooner the better!

It’ll be nice to actually HAVE and OWN a new car for once. All the ones I’ve driven have been “hand me downs.” My preference will be a new car over a used one, but I’ll take used if it becomes necessary.

Coulda had a 1999 Jetta for $1,500, but it’s stick. I don’t drive stick.

Congrats on the raise Nyn. I wuold suggest (if there is one in your area) www.carmax.com

We got our Windstar and my Sable there and they actually do make sure the vehicles are in good condition before they sell them (used).

I just hope everything goes as well with getting me and my family moved as it seems to have been for you with your car troubles.

We bought a new Hyundai Accent last year for around 10K, which with interest rates was a 200/month payment. It's been pretty reliable, and they do have a really good warranty. You might want to look into something like that.

Congratulations on the raise. :)
