Five Years Ago....

I got a call in my office that Tuesday morning from a co-worker, Sherry.

“Good morning. I just thought you would like to know we’re under terrorist attack.”

Me.. “Um. Yeah. Right. Sure we are. But good morning.”

Sherry. “No, really, we are. Two airplanes just crashed into the World Trade Center.”

Me. Stunned. “You’re joking right?”

Her. “No.”

I sincerely thought she was pulling a prank that morning, and lo and behold she wasn’t. It’s not the type of conversation you forget, either, especially when it turns out to be true. That week was a blurred haze. I hauled my little television in to work for the rest of the week to watch the investigations and everything else going on – even though I had poor reception.

Work wouldn’t let us go early that day, even though nothing productive was getting done. Everyone was standing around the single radio in our part of the company, which considered of approximately 20 data entry people, 3 supervisors, and 25 telemarketers.

Still, watching or hearing anything about it is too raw for me, even though I wasn’t as intimately affected by what happened as those who lost family members and friends. A part of America died that day – not just people. We came together for the families and to rescue survivors yes, however we’ve never fully recovered. We now live and react to things in fear – just as they wanted.
