Good Samaritan...?

Today, when I went to get lunch at the Superfresh, I heard, “Excuse me, Miss…. Can you spare some change?” I was totally and completely prepared to tell her no, and walk away. I normally do that. Normally. You never know where cash will go. But, as she approached, I saw the child in her arms, who could be no more than 4 or 5 years old. The child was lying against the woman’s breast, head on her shoulder, with a striped hooded coat over her head, and bare legs. The temperature outside is below 30 degrees F. My heart went out for them both.

I told her, “I don’t normally do this, but here you go.” I had $22 in my wallet, and I gave her the two $1 bills.

I started to walk away, but then as she was walking away from me, I thought back to the kid. I went into my wallet and got the other $20 I had there and gave it to her. I didn’t know what she was going to use it for, and at that point I didn’t care – she had a kid. I didn’t ask either.

To her credit, she seemed surprised and asked, “Are you sure?”

I simply nodded at her and told her, “I’m sure.”

I walked away after that, and as I was walking away I heard her tell her child, “Okay honey, now we can get something to eat and gas for the car so Mommy can go to work.”

I went on my way to get my lunch, as I don’t have a long lunch break. Thinking back, I felt ill prepared for that sort of situation. At my last job, I worked for the Neighborhood Service Center in Easton, MD and we ran a shelter, and we also had resources to other shelters all over Maryland. I’ve long since lost those contacts when I moved out to the Western Shore of MD. If I could have gotten to a computer though, I could have found some – but by that time the thought occurred to me, we had both went our separate ways.

So, here’s to hoping the money went to a good cause, and not to line some drug dealer’s pockets, as we most typically think will happen. Still, I wish I could have done more for her.

The fact that you did anything says a great deal about the person you are. Many people wouldn't look twice at that situation as they went about their daily business. What you did was very admirable.

You did what you felt was right, and that's what matters. If they use it for bad, then its their karma not yours which will suffer.

Even if it goes into a drug dealer's pocket -- not that I'm advocating that, mind you! -- you still did the Right Thing. I'm proud to call you a friend. :) (Well, I was proud before, but now I'm More Proud. ;)
